About
Join a wonderful experience with nature, culture and history. A combined boat ride and nature hike.
In a seaworthy fast boat we take you on a safe adventure past the dramatic wall of Lofoten and deserted fishing villages to Yttersia and the cave of Refsvika with its 3-4000 year old cave paintings.
The boat driver will meet you at our office in Reine where your floatation suits/ life jacket is being provided. Our boat drivers have all the necessary certificates, are very familiar with the waters and conditions in the area and excellent local knowledge. Because the cave of Refsvika is a protected sight, there must be an authorized guide with us on these trips. Our guides have extensive experience with tours in this area and has exceptional local knowledge about nature, culture and history. The boats are equipped with life-saving equipment according to applicable regulations.
Once everyone has found themselves comfortable on board, we begin the journey westward. We take you past recent history and abandoned fishing villages to ancient history and the Stone Age on our trip along the Lofoten Wall and the outer coastline. On the way out we pass through the famous Maelstrom. Having rounded the tip of Lofoten we go ashore close to the village of Refsvika. We take the time for a snack at the camp before we begin the hike. You can bring your own food, we provide coffee and tea.
We walk parts of the old school route along a well trodden path, over a rock slide and a white sandy beach, until we come to a slightly steeper incline up to the cave. The authorized guide is with us the whole trip and tells you about different places you pass by, and he/she gives you a tour inside the cave where you get to see Stone Age paintings of dancing human figures from several thousand years back.
On the hike back to the camp, you have plenty of time to enjoy the scenery, the views and the tranquility Yttersia offers. The boat trip back to Reine goes without scheduled stops, but if we see something exciting we will take the time to explore and enjoy.
